History of Adopt a Family Fund

Serving the needs of others for the past twenty eight years

God placed it on the hearts of a small group of Christ followers to make an impact on the world. The foundation of the Adopt a Family Fund was born during that small, unorganized meeting of willing servants.

A Few of the Highlights

The following are just a few of the highlights from the annual mercy trips and ongoing month-to-month sponsored programs.

1998

Our first trip was in 1998. An exploratory mission that was used to gain new contacts and better understand the needs in the country.

We spend three weeks in the coastal city of La Ceiba.

1999

The mission of 1999 was extraordinary. Hurricane Mitch devastated the area. Tens of thousands were still homeless.

Our team spent the most time passing out bags of food and building shelters for the homeless.

2003

The size of our volunteer team grew rapidly from 2000 to 2022. This was due to the extensive coverage of the extreme poverty in Honduras.

In 2003, we brought a large group of volunteers to hold medical clinics. Clinics included healthcare, dental services, clothing distribution, and handing our family food bags.

2007

A special family-focused program was started this year. An opportunity for US donors to sponsor a family (household) in Honduras. Matching donors with households worked very well.

Supported families would write letters each month to update their sponsor. In addition, the children of each household received special attention on nutrition.

2016

The expansion of our Student Advancement program resulted in assisting sponsored students to attend all levels of education. A rewarding program that empowers poor children to excel.

Students are challenged to learn how to read and write. Then they are empowered to pursue education and training that is based on their career desires, capabilities, and accomplishments.

2021

This year was challenging. Covid-19 was affecting the whole world. Poorer countries were devastated by both Covid-19 and the global response to Covid-19. Many experienced hunger.

Our team placed a focus on providing for the needs of the most vulnerable. Meeting the needs of the elderly, household with “no” or very “low” income. Providing relief through the tons of items donated by our amazing donor team. Praise God!

Magnified Results by God’s Wisdom

Little did we know — that God would transform our vision into something well beyond our imagination.

What the Lord has done

  • Transformed Lives. Hundreds of lives have been transformed through the efforts of the volunteers, donors, and prayer warriors. Real economic change. Better jobs, healthier families, and God-focused individuals.
  • Raised up native Ambassadors. The Lord trained, raised up a group of volunteers that we like to call “Ambassadors of Christ”. Individuals that were in the program as children. Returning the love on behalf of their country. Diligent, educated young people devoted to doing good in the world.
  • Ample Donors. God has always provided everything we needed to serve the people that are served. The goal is not to become the “biggest” charity or “Top Five” non-profit. It is to glorify God, love people, and work with the resources that God provides. Our amazing donors are relentless in their support. Beautiful individuals that truly care about reducing poverty one-person at a time. We are very grateful.

Meeting Need’s

  • Spiritual. Our history of meeting spiritual needs is one of our most treasured memories. Over 100 people have turned to Jesus Christ in repentance, baptism, and faith.
  • Nutrition. Meeting nutritional needs is essential. All other areas rely on the success of our nutrition programs. When people are well-fed they think clearer, live well, and have a more positive outlook on the future.
  • Health. Healthcare is expensive. It is even more expensive when someone lives in extreme poverty. The hospitals in Central America usually face their own financial shortfalls. Healthcare is a complex topic in Honduras. Our fund meets the needs of individuals that are sponsored.
  • Shelter. Our history of building shelters dates back to when we first started in 1998. Shelter is an important part of basic human needs and dignity. We make every effort to ensure that people have a place to live. Shelter from the natural elements. Safety for their loved ones.
  • Clothing. United States donors provide clothing, footwear, and key essentials (socks, hats, underwear). We cannot thank everyone enough. These gifts have helped individuals stay warm, be prepared for school, work better, and feel better. The ton of clothing that is sent each year makes it directly to these that are most in need.
  • Career. Most the career development is with recent graduates that have now become nurses, engineers, electricians, HVAC technicians, office workers, and other positions. Your donations have made it possible for hundreds of young people to help their families to escape extreme poverty.
